What is Avandia?

Avandia, also known as rosiglitazone, is a popular anti-diabetic drug manufactured by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. Avandia is most commonly prescribed to treat Type-2 diabetes. Avandia was approved for diabetes treatment, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 1999. Since that time, an estimated 60+ million Avandia prescriptions have been written.
Unfortunately, after being approved by the FDA, reports soon began to surface linking Avandia to serious side effects. Some of the more serious side effects include:

A study performed by two researchers from the Cleveland Clinic analyzed 42 previous Avandia studies, involving 14,000 patients. The study results showed that Avandia users suffered 43% more heart attacks than those patients on a placebo medication. The New England Journal of Medicine published the findings of the study in May of 2007. This article prompted the FDA to issue a public safety warning and to request a black box warning for Avandia. The Avandia label now warns of increased heart failure and other cardiac danger. Symptoms of heart failure in Avandia patients may include the following:

• Swelling of Extremities
• Shortness of Breath
• Fluid in the Lungs
• High Blood Pressure
• Severe Chest Pain
