What is Avandia?

Sarasota Avandia LawyersAvandia, also known as rosiglitazone, is a popular anti-diabetic drug manufactured by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. Avandia is most commonly prescribed to treat Type-2 diabetes. Avandia was approved for diabetes treatment, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 1999. Since that time, an estimated 60+ million Avandia prescriptions have been written.
Unfortunately, after being approved by the FDA, reports soon began to surface linking Avandia to serious side effects. Some of the more serious side effects include:

  • Heart Attack
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Myocardial Ischemia
  • Severe Allergic Reaction

Serious Side Effects of Avandia

A study performed by two researchers from the Cleveland Clinic analyzed 42 previous Avandia studies, involving 14,000 patients. The study results showed that Avandia users suffered 43% more heart attacks than those patients on a placebo medication. The New England Journal of Medicine published the findings of the study in May of 2007. This article prompted the FDA to issue a public safety warning and to request a black box warning for Avandia. The Avandia label now warns of increased heart failure and other cardiac danger. Symptoms of heart failure in Avandia patients may include the following:

  • Weight Gain
  • Swelling of Extremities
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Fluid in the Lungs
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Severe Chest Pain

What to Do If You Experience Avandia Side Effects

You should not discontinue your medication unless specifically directed to do so by your physician. If you are experiencing physical problems or medical conditions that you believe to be a side effect of taking Avandia, you need to contact your physician first. A physician should evaluate your symptoms and medical condition to determine the course of action to be taken. Make sure you relay your concerns regarding Avandia to your physician.

After seeking medical attention, you may want to seek legal counsel. An experienced personal injury attorney can evaluate your circumstances and determine if you have an Avandia claim.
