Tire Blowout Claims One Life, Injures Another in North Port

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports, one person was killed and a second person seriously injured in an I-75 accident on Sunday evening in North Port. The 2001 Ford SUV involved in the accident was traveling southbound, approximately two miles west of North Sumter Blvd. in North Port when the right rear tire blew out. The blowout caused the driver, 59 year old Richard Frank Lancellotti of Sarasota, to lose control of the SUV. The vehicle then traveled into the median and rolled over, coming to rest on the driver’s side door.

Lancellotti was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The sole passenger in the SUV, Sharon Lyle, 50, of Sarasota was sent to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, with serious injuries. Both the driver and passenger were reportedly wearing seatbelts.

Bradenton Bicyclist Killed After Being Struck By Car

According to Palmetto Police reports, a Bradenton man died after being hit by a car and falling into the Manatee River. At approximately 4:20 a.m. on Sunday, Adon Newsone, 44, was riding a bicycle southbound across the DeSoto Bridge. Newsone was struck from behind, by a southbound 1997 Saturn, driven by 35 year old Gustavo Ramirez of Palmetto.

Ramirez first stopped his vehicle and then proceeded south to Manatee Memorial Hospital to report the accident. Palmetto Police are still investigating the accident.

On February 6, 2012, we reported a recall by American Honda Motor Co., involving the Crosstour and Accord, due to faulty side curtain airbags. Today, Honda announced that they are adding certain model year 2012 Honda Civic and Acura MDX vehicles to the recall. The reason for the recall is that the side curtain airbag initiator may not have been manufactured to the correct specifications. In the event of a crash, the airbag may fail to deploy increasing the risk of injury.

Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2012 Legacy and Outback vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured from December 1, 2011 to December 23, 2011. The recalled vehicles may be equipped with side curtain airbags that contain an incorrect propellant mixture for the air bag initiator component. This incorrect propellant mixture can lead to an insufficient output of compressed gas. As a result, the side curtain airbags may not deploy at the time of an accident, increasing the risk of injury to the passengers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has begun to notify dental care practices, parents and consumers about reported serious injuries and potential hazards associated with all models of the Church & Dwight Co., Inc. manufactured Spinbrush. The incident reports indicate that while powered on, the head of the Spinbrush has either “popped off” or broken off in the user’s mouth or in close proximity to the face. These incidents have caused lacerations to the mouth and gums, chipped or broken teeth, swallowing and choking on the broken pieces, and injuries to the face and eyes. According to the FDA warning, the unexpected release of any part of the powered toothbrush, there is a potential for serious injury. The injury risk may be higher for children or adults who require assistance while using a toothbrush.

The Spinbrush line of powered toothbrushes are currently marketed and sold as the Arm & Hammer Spinbrush. Up until 2009, it was also sold as the Crest Spinbrush. The FDA recommends that consumers:

Inspect the Spinbrush for any damage or loose brush bristles prior to using. If you notice any damage or loose brush bristles, DO NOT USE.
Check to be sure that the headpiece is connected properly to the handle of the brush and test your brush outside of the mouth prior to using. If you notice the connection feels loose or the headpiece easily detaches from the handle, DO NOT USE.
Supervise children and adults who need assistance when using the Spinbrush.
Do not bite down on the brush head while brushing.

Playground Slides Recalled Following Injury Reports

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Landscape Structures Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of the Slalom Glider. The Slalom Glider is found on playgrounds and lacks a transition platform on at the top and sides of the chute. The Slalom Glider is a 6-foot high playground slide that is curved and distinctive in shape, including a arched, tubular steel access ladder. The slide comes as a stand-alone slide or as an additional attachment to other playground equipment.

The CPSC and Landscape Structures Inc. have received 16 reports of children falling when transitioning from the ladder to the slide and when descending the chute. These fall reports have resulted in 14 fractures to arms and legs, one fractured collar bone and a bruised spleen.

The Slalom Glider were sold nationwide to schools and other facilities with playground equipment between January 2006 and December 2011 for approximately $2,300. The recalled Slalom Glider slides were sold in numerous colors, including red, blue, tan, green, granite and white.

Stihl Recalls MS 391 Chainsaws Due to Injury Risk

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stihl Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of certain Stihl MS 391 Chainsaws. According to the recall report, the flywheel on the chainsaw may crack. This can cause the flywheel parts to separate from the chainsaw and strike the user or bystanders, posing a rick of injury.

This recall involves the gas-powered Stihl MS 391 chainsaw. These chainsaws have an orange top casing, a gray base and a black front handle and hand guard. Both “Stihl” and “MS 391″ are printed in orange on the starter side of the chainsaw. The serial number is printed to the right of the muffler on the crankcase, when viewed from the rear of the chainsaw. These units were sold nationwide from March 2011 through July 2011 for approximately $530 to $550.

Two Car Accident in Bradenton Injures Five

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports show a two car accident in Bradenton, at approximately 7:05 p.m. last night, injured five people. According t the FHP report, a white Ford Explorer was on 14th Street West and headed southbound with no headlights on.

A black Chevy Malibu, exiting an Orlando Avenue car dealership, made a left turn onto the northbound lanes of 14th Street West colliding with the Explorer.

Four occupants inside the Explorer were transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Malibu was taken to Blake Medical center, also with minor injuries.

5 Year Old Bicyclist Hit by Dump Truck in Sarasota

A 5 year old child is listed in critical condition after being hit by a dump truck on University Parkway in Sarasota. According to media reports and Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports, Isaiah Jackson of Sarasota was riding his bicycle alone southbound along Lockwood Ridge Road at approximately 1:45 pm. His parents were following behind him in a vehicle. As Jackson approached University Parkway, he failed to stop and continued through the intersection.

The various reports indicate that Tyler Bowser, a 35 year old resident of Sarasota, was driving a Kenworth T800 dump truck eastbound and had a green light when he struck the child. There are skid marks on University Parkway where Bowser unsuccessfully attempted to avoid hitting the child.

Jackson was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was taken by Bayflite to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. The child’s parents were later witnessed picking up the bicycle from the scene of the crash. The FHP is continuing their investigation and charges are pending.
