The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to Oncology physicians, pharmacies and patients about a counterfeit version of Avastin 400mg/16mL. The counterfeit Avastin may have been bought and administered by some U.S. medical practices. The counterfeit version is labeled and the Roche version of Avastin. However, it does not contain the medication’s active ingredient, bevacizumab. This may have resulted in cancer patients not receiving their needed therapy. To date, 19 medical practices in the U.S. have been reported as purchasing the counterfeit Avastin.
The Roche version of Avastin is only approved for marketing outside of the U.S. The only version of Avastin, approved by the FDA for use in the U.S., is marketed by Genetech. The FDA approved version does not include the Roche logo on the packages or medication vials. The lab testing that confirmed the counterfeit version of Avastin was conducted by Roche.
The unapproved cancer medicines are being reported as having been purchased from Quality Specialty Products (QSP), a foreign supplier that may also be known as Montana Health Care Solutions. Volunteer Distribution in Gainesboro, Tennessee is a distributor of QSP’s products. Avastin medication packages or vials may be counterfeit if they:
- are labeled with Roche as the manufacturer
- display batch numbers that start with B6010, B6011 or B86017
