According to The Telegraph, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), Briton’s equivalent of the FDA, medical regulators are drawing up new advice for recipients of metal-on-metal hip implants due to fears that the implants are more dangerous than previously thought.
Due to friction between the metal ball and cup of the hip implant, minute metal particles can break off. These metal particles can seep into the bloodstream, causing inflammation around the hip implant as well as destroy muscle tissue and bone. According to the report, there are concerns that these metal particles could possibly put the heart and lungs at risk of being slowly poisoned. Additionally, the increased levels of cobalt and chromium in the bloodstream could be toxic to the kidneys and in the case of a pregnant woman, be passed on to the unborn child.
The Telegraph stated that, “The problems have been found to affect people of all ages but studies have found young and petite women are particularly at risk.”
