Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants Failing Faster With Age

In their Autumn Report, the National Joint Registry of England and Wales (NJR) identified a much higher rate of failure as metal-on-metal hi implants age. According to the report, the following implant revision rates apply at the seven year mark:

  • Overall (All Hip Implants) – 4.7%
  • Cemented Hip Implants – 3%
  • Hybrid Hip Implants – 3.8%
  • Uncemented Hip Implants – 4.6%
  • Hip Resurfacing Implants – 11.8%
  • Stemmed Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants – 13.6%

According to the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society, the data from four surgeons, shows that the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System has a revision rate that ranges from 21% after four years to 49% after six years.

The NJR report went further to state, “Adjusted revision rates for the resurfacing and stemmed metal-on-metal groups remained significantly above those of other groups indicating that the higher revision rates cannot simply be explained by the patients being younger on average and more typically male.”

The NJR report also identified that revision rates were much higher in women than men when a stemmed metal-on-metal hip implant was used.
