Child Pedestrian Deaths Increase 450% on Halloween

According to a study conducted by the U-M Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), on Halloween night, pedestrian deaths involving children increase 450%. The increase does not include daylight hours and only includes children under the age of 15. The data used for the report was obtained from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System, using statistics on pedestrian fatalities from 1987 to 2004.

Halloween Pedestrian Safety Tips:

  • Plan costumes using bright colors
  • Use reflective vests or tape
  • Purchase and carry flashlights or glow sticks
  • Always accompany your children
  • Remind your children to look both ways before crossing the street
  • Always cross at designated crosswalks
  • Never cross between parked cars
  • Don’t assume the right of way, make sure traffic in both directions stop before crossing
  • Stay in a group, if possible
  • Remain on well lit streets
  • Always use the sidewalk
  • Carry a cell phone for quick communications
