ATV Accident Deaths Up Among Children

An emerging study has found that hospitalizations for accidents linked to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have increased substantially—150 percent—from 1987 to 2006 in children under the age of 18, said Bloomberg Business Week.

Most significantly, the highest increases took place in the South and Midwest areas of the United States in teenagers in the 15-to-17-year-old age range, noted Bloomberg Business Week. While males in this group saw the highest rate of hospitalizations related to ATV accidents, females saw the deepest increase—250 percent—in ATV hospitalizations in the time frame studied, reported Bloomberg Business Week. ATV’s are tempting “toys”. But, in truth, they are anything but “toys” especially in the wrong hands. I suspect that most children don’t follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when riding them and that, if they did, ATV sales would plummet. When they don’t follow those recommendations, tragedy can and does ensue. Parents, think twice before you buy an ATV for your child. Children face enough danger on a daily basis without help from mom and dad.
